It was on a Sunday night that my water broke, one day before my due date. We had just come home from a night at my sister’s house and were settled into bed when I felt two kicks and then my water broke.
Jon didn’t believe me at first. While I took a shower, he quickly cleaned up the house and packed a bag for himself.
We were excited and a little nervous; there was no turning back now. In 24 hours we would be first time parents.
Wyatt Daniel was born on a Monday afternoon, just after lunch time. He had red hair and was perfect.
Now he is six years old, just finished kindergarten and will be headed off to the big first grade in the fall. I am so excited for his future!
He’s a bit of a sensitive kid, which is good and sometimes not so good. But I wouldn’t change that about him. He’s the first kid to apologize, give me big hugs and tell me he loves me.
He loves his daddy. He loves to fish and hunt and spend time at the shop, fiddling around with the various odds and ends that any shop would have. He loves going to QT and getting snacks; I don’t think he’s realized it’s actually a gas station and not just a fun place to get snacks.
Wyatt had been growing his hair out for most of the school year. We had it trimmed once, but it was getting a bit ridiculous. With his kindergarten graduation less than two weeks away, I knew I wanted to get it cut before then, just enough time to not have that you-just-got-your-hair-cut-look. I also knew that I wanted to take some pictures of him with his hair long prior to that.
I finally made the time. Jon was working late one Monday, so I rounded up my three kids and drove out to some property my sister owns. It’s the perfect place for taking pictures of your six-year-old while leaving your 22-month old and 3.5 year-old unattended. There wasn’t much for them to get into and its pretty hard to get lost out there.
I tried really hard to be patient with Wyatt while we took pictures. It’s so much easier for me to be patient with other people’s children. My children, I expect them to be nearly perfect. With other people’s children, I’m so much more understanding. It’s something I’m working on with my children.
We took pictures for 40 minutes or so. The other two kids wanted to jump in for a couple, we did that. We walked around and played a little bit, then wrapped it up and headed back home.
Here’s my favorites from Wyatt’s six-year-old portrait session.
