Fall is always my favorite time to photograph families. The colors are changing. It’s sweater weather. The mornings and evenings are crisp, but the afternoons can still warm your bones in the late summer sun.
Photographing families is always something I both look forward to and enjoy. Especially when that family is my actual family. Or, in this case, my husband’s sister and her family.
We headed out to The Barn and started with a family portrait. I try to start with the whole family in case the little kids aren’t too sure of me. In this case, the little kids already know me, so we really didn’t have any issues there.
Then I will break down into smaller groups, mom with the kids, mom with the girls, mom with the boys, mom with each kid. I will repeat that process with dad if he’s up for it, but always with mom.
Once those portraits are completed, I will get a headshot of each kid and lastly a few with mom and dad by themselves. We’ll throw in a few more random portraits, or if the client has a specific request, I will be sure to photograph that as well.
I keep family portrait sessions moving, especially if there are little people. They tend to lose focus quickly and those few seconds I can get with everyone looking at the camera are rare.
Here are my favorite images from this session!
