Its hard to believe I was in Breckenridge, CO just a few short months ago. I took a quick weekend and attended the See you in the Clouds Workshop with Sara Garcia and Nicole Dina Photography, both based out of Colorado.
At the beginning of this year, I had felt something missing in my portraits. Technically, they were good, no problems there. But they were lacking emotion and I wasn’t sure how to get that from my portraits.
I had always tried to edit my photos in a classic, timeless way which basically means, traditionally. I was okay with this method for a while, but I was constantly being drawn into the images with gorgeous light and had a more moody feel to them.
I wasn’t sure how to accomplish this.
Then, one day, two of the photographers I follow on Instagram announced they were holding a workshop in Breckenridge and would be covering this very topic.
I jumped at the opportunity and could not wait to learn from these two and the other attendees.
My sister-in-law ended up coming out to Breckenridge with me for a little mini vacation. We explored Breckenridge, Denver, the Olympic Training Center, Garden of the Gods, and enjoyed it. I hadn’t been back to Denver since first visiting back in 2013 and it was fun to revisit those places again.
The workshop was a good hands on learning session. I was able to watch over 10 different photographers work and interact with the two families that had volunteered to be photographed. I learned to underexpose my images in my camera to capture all that gorgeous light. I learned how to edit those images to reproduce a powerful image. I learned how to set families up with general guidance and then just let them do their thing while I snapped away.
I learned how to look for those little hands on mom’s dress, or little hands playing with hair, or quick expressions shared between two siblings, or the enormous amount of love communicated between mom and dad.
I enjoyed every minute of my time in Colorado and I can’t wait to go back.
The girls are at it again and will be hosting another workshop in the Frisco area of Colorado next summer. They have added the extremely talented Bethany Sams Photography as an instructor. I am super excited to learn from her, as well as Sara and Nicole again!
