I know I can always count on family to be up for a portrait session. Usually it’s when I’m feeling a lack of creativity or want to try something different to get out of doing the same thing or I want to try out a new technique I’ve learned.
In this case, I wanted to photograph in the mountains. . . without driving three hours for some pretty spectacular views. My next best option was still in the mountains and a little bit closer to home. It just didn’t offer the jaw-dropping views of majestic mountains like you would see in Colorado.
Nonetheless. I digress.
Rachel and I worked together on outfits and I love the color combinations we came up with. They complimented the location and each other perfectly.
My goal for this session was to try out a different lens. I shoot Canon and my go to lenses are the 50 f/1.2 and 70-200 f/2.8. While I love both lenses, I was ready to branch out. I rented the 35 f/1.2 from LensRentals.com (highly recommend them!) and was ready to go.
I must say, I had never shot with this prime lens before. It didn’t disappoint. I loved shooting it and now have a tiny savings fund going to make this my next purchase.
I am quickly learning that I love to photograph mothers and their children. I realize that most mothers aren’t crazy about being photographed, but it is so important! Usually we are the ones behind the camera lens taking the photos. Or we just have our children photographed each year. I strongly urge you to be photographed with your children! How many photos do you have with your mother? I would imagine it’s not that many. And how much do you cherish those few photos?
I’ll get off my soap box.
Photographing people that aren’t paying clients also frees me up to experiment and try things that may not always pan out. I don’t feel the pressure to always know exactly what I’m doing all the time. Anyone else ever feel this way? No? Just me then.
Reagan was an absolute rock star and she did fantastic. I’m not biased at all. No, really, I’m not. As far as babies go, she was so easy to photograph and was always engaging me with her gorgeous little eyes. And those rolls! This little girl is known for her rolls!
Which image is your favorite? I had a hard time deciding which one is mine!
