My son recently turned seven and I typically take portraits of them as close to their birthday as possible. Sometimes that’s within days, other times. . . well, not so much.
My mother was recently visiting us and brought a dress down for my daughter. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to photograph her in it. So, instead of a single outing with my oldest son for his portraits, we turned it into a family affair and I photographed all three.
I have a local place I like to use for portraits although I think its starting to become overused, but that’s my own fault. It’s just convenient. Good places in the Upstate, close to the city, are hard to find. At least ones that aren’t over shot and ones that everyone and their brother likes to use. I prefer off the beaten path or places that aren’t used all the time.
I digress.
Photographing your own kids isn’t like photographing other children. I am so much more impatient with my children than I would ever be with client’s children. Trust me parents, I fully understand wanting your children to obey for portraits!
I tried to remain relaxed and calm for their sake. Overall I was happy with the outcome of the portraits and I think they will allow me to photograph them again, so it wasn’t a complete wash out.
Here are my favorites. It’s hard to choose as a mother and a photographer. Some of them aren’t technically correct, from a photographer stand point. However, from a mother’s view, they are all perfect.
I know I’m biased, but I think my kids are pretty dang cute.
