What a fun motorcycle couples portrait session this was! I loved the fact I was able to incorporate this couple’s enjoyment of the bike into their couples portrait session! This is the second year that I’ve held a model call and I am really enjoying these sessions. What is a model call you ask? It’s a portrait session held for a very specific purpose. In my case, I need to work on couples posing and I want to work on some editing as well. So, I asked for married or engaged couples who would be willing to pose for me in exchange for a reduced portrait fee and a free print of their choice.
This allows me to get some much-needed practice in, but it also allows some great portraits for my clients at a reduced rate. They just need to be patient with me and let me do my thing.
When we first started collaborating together, Tarissa and I both wanted to use the couple’s motorcycle in the portrait session. Dillon had recently purchased a new bike and we all thought it would be fun to use it for their model call.
I had never shot a session with a motorcycle, so I turned to Pinterest for some inspiration. I created a shared Pinterest board with Tarissa, so we could compare ideas and collaborate on the specific look we were trying to achieve.
Almost immediately Tarissa had many outfit ideas and I loved all of them. She did such a great job styling herself and her husband, Dillon. I knew I wanted something a little different than the wife in a dress and the husband in a polo. With using the motorcycle in the portrait session, I wanted their outfits to match the biker feel and be a little more edgy, but still be classy. I wasn’t going for leather halter tops and cutoff jean booty-shorts! But if that’s your thing, more power to ya!
Anyways. . .
After we arrived on location we took a few pictures and played around with some different setups, when Dillon pointed at something over by the woods. I completely thought it would be a deer or some other woodland animal that had caught his attention. But no, it was a black bear! Just walking along the edge of the woods. I immediately tried to get a few photos of it, but my settings were adjusted for the lighting that far away and by the time I had them changed, the bear had sauntered back into the woods.
Talk about getting your heart pumping! For the rest of the session I kept my ears open and one eye peeled for that bear. We didn’t see him again, but I could have sworn I heard some grunts throughout the session. The whole time I was thinking how quickly can I run back to my Tahoe? It made for a couple of exciting minutes.
Things settled back down, and we continued to shoot. Having the bike to use in the session was fun, it helped me get creative with posing and I was so thankful I had my Pinterest board to reference when I got stuck with ideas.
Dillon and Tarissa had some ideas of their own and that helped keep the creative juices flowing.
This session was a lot of fun, bear included. I’m just glad I didn’t have to do the 50-yard dash! Here’s several of my favorites from their session.
