Sarah and I met in 2004 in the middle of the California Mojave desert at Ironwood Christian camp. Turns out she attended the same church as my future husband, Jon, did. Fast forward almost 12 years later and we’re still friends, still attending the same church.
Sarah is the owner of Purple Goat Studio in Taylors Mill. Her art is influenced by the beauty of the western landscape as well as her southern heritage. The majority of her works are focused on landscapes and animals and incorporate a touch of realism, whimsy and bright colors.
I was so excited for Sarah when she contacted me asking about engagement portraits. I knew she had been seeing someone, but had no idea they had been engaged! Of course I said absolutely!
Sarah’s fiance, Jeremy, is from Illinois (I liked him already, us Northerners have to stick together). We set up a time when Jeremy could make it to Greenville and scheduled their engagement portraits.
I always like to ask my clients about the things they are interested in, something that drew them together, or if they have a special place they like to visit. This helps to make their portrait session more special for them. With Jeremy and Sarah, it was downtown Greenville and the suspension bridge, so that’s where we headed.
Living in Greenville has its perks, and a beautiful downtown is just one of the many. Of course, everybody loves downtown, so we had to bob and weave a little bit to avoid the average bystander and passerby while taking portraits.
The other thing I always like to talk about with my clients is their choice of outfits. I always, always, plead with them not to match, not to wear khakis and white shirts and not to wear jeans and black shirts. In my opinion, it just doesn’t work well for this type of portrait. They have their place, just not with me for engagement portraits.
I will suggest wearing something comfortable, something that makes you feel like a million bucks, and in a color that coordinates with whomever you are having your portrait taken with. You will want to get dressed up a little bit and wear something that you might not wear every day, especially for something as special as engagement portraits.
Sarah and Jeremy did a great job with their clothing choice! A pop of color, layers, and they both felt fantastic!
Along with their engagement portraits, Jeremy and Sarah also opted to receive all their digital files. I love how this customized USB drive turned out!
I’m looking forward to photographing Jeremy and Sarah’s wedding in May! I’m excited for the two of you and can’t wait to see the rest of your story together!
