Over this past spring weekend I had the privilege to photograph the family of David and Katie and their super cute little guy Ryan!
I loved the outfits they put together, a mix of coral, blue and white, perfect for spring portraits! Clothing choice is so important for portraits. Of course, the star of the show was 15-month-old Ryan and his cute-as-a-button bow tie! It totally made the pictures! He looked so adorable and grown up with it on! He has changed so much since his six-month-old pictures!
We took a few formal portraits to get warmed up and everyone settled in. I always try to start with the entire family so the kids feel safe with mom and dad close while they get used to this funny looking lady in front of them making weird noises. When photographing the child or children with one parent, I always have the other parent stand directly behind me. This gives the rest of the family a familiar face to look at and hopefully gives me a genuine smile to photograph.
Then, we transitioned to some more casual poses, walking, playing, talking with each other. I find that these are my favorite moments, as they present a more natural feel to the family and everyone seems to relax even more. A family is most at ease in front of the camera when they do not have to pose, especially the little people (and sometimes adults). It’s always fun to encourage a family to interact through the camera lens.
Once we have taken several of those kinds of shots, I will start taking photos of the kids. I like to let the kids have their space and have found its best to let them be themselves. Yes, we will herd them in the right direction if they are mobile, but they are happier if they aren’t stuck in one spot for too long.
Then, I always like to try and get a few of just mom and dad, since they are dressed up and stylin’. Who doesn’t love a photo of them and their spouse?
Here’s my favorites from our spring family portraits this past weekend in Greenville!
