Studio portraits have always been a goal to work towards. I have always wanted to photograph women in a studio setting, but have never put the effort into it. Typically I have photographed my client portraits with natural lighting in the great outdoors and the thought of a studio was a little overwhelming.
I have several different lights and reflectors, but haven’t really spent the time necessary to learn them and and put them to use. Several years ago, I came across a pinterest post about a photographer who used her garage and a simple background for her ‘studio’ portraits. The idea was so simple and easy!
I contacted a friend, who, at the time, was expecting a baby. She was incredibly gracious in accepting my invitation to photograph her with my makeshift studio. Because she is so laid back and up for anything, I knew I could practice some ‘studio’ looks without actually having a studio.
My sister has a large barn that she allowed us to use for the makeshift studio and it worked out perfectly. Things probably would have been a little too tight if we tried to use my garage.
When it came to outfits, I asked my friend to bring something dark and form fitting and something flowy. I have to say, I really think she nailed it! She’s such a beautiful person, both inside and out, and I’m so thankful I was able to photograph these maternity portraits!
