Well, I told myself I wasn’t going to do any more newborn photos, because I just don’t have the setup for it and I can’t do all the cute little poses that are so popular now. The only exception to that rule is family and very close friends, or if you are totally fine with how these looks, maybe we can talk. Maybe.
After five boys being born into the family, we now have a girl! She was born the end of February and is adorable! Finally, we’ll have someone to buy all that girly-girl stuff for, although I’m going to have a hard time buying her anything too girly. Lord help me if I ever have a girl, but that’s another story. Natalie also is the very first newborn girl that I’ve photographed. Granted, I’ve not had too many newborns, but they have all been boys, so I was excited to have a girl for once.
My sister-in-law and her husband came up for the week so of course I had to photograph baby Natalie while she was in town. Seriously, she made my job so easy. She slept the entire time and really didn’t care what position I put her in. The very first image I took was of her smiling and I think its one of my favorites. When she gave me her smile, I knew I probably could have quit right there and been totally happy. But we kept going. I was able to use some new material I had originally purchased as a background, but loved using it for a blanket.
Our set up was very simple (which I loved). I purchased a bean bag from Target, it’s not as fancy as the actual newborn bean bags you can buy, but it’s a whole lot cheaper and it works for me. I add a few blankets or pillows underneath to get the desired height and laid my fabric over top. We placed the bean bag about three feet out from a corner which had windows on either side. Looking back, I should have got a picture of it, because I love all those behind the scenes looks, but didn’t think about it at the time. I was shot her whole session with my new favorite lens, the 50 f/1.2 L. That bad boy definitely got bumped up on the wanted list.
Here are a few of my favorites from our session. If you’re interested in viewing the rest of her photos, you can do so here.
