This year my sister wanted something different for their family portraits. She didn’t want anything super posed and she didn’t want to get dressed up. She sent me a few pictures of ideas she had and I thought it was something we could make happen.
The idea she sent over was a campfire and have everyone sitting around, kind of like camping, only not really camping.
I liked the idea.
There were a few things that made photographing their family in front of a camp fire a little difficult. One was the wind, it kept changing. One minute the smoke was blowing away and the next it was directly in everyone’s faces. We had to be patient and wait for the wind to change directions, then be ready to shoot quickly before it changed back.
The other thing we had to work around was the firewood. We had a lot of rain prior to their session, so finding dry wood was a little bit of a challenge. It made for a lot of smoke and just a few flames due to the diesel used to start the fire.
Of course, the one image that I really love didn’t turn out quite like I wanted it to. Can you guess which one below has a bit more artistic feel to it than the others?
